Although German capital ships remained a threat, they were blockaded and largely ineffective. Nevertheless up to 1943 Germany was winning the war thanks to its U-boats which had already sunk 12 million tons of merchant shipping. In November 1942 alone they sank 117 ships, but the Allies were fighting back and in May 1943 the tide turned with the hunters becoming the hunted. British estimation for the life expectancy of a U-boat was now 50 days, and out of 820 boats, 718 were destroyed in action with only 7,000 of their crews out of 39,000 surviving the conflict. This is the story of Peter ‘Ali’ Cremer’s war aboard U-333, one of three senior U-boat commanders. He finished the war as commander of Donitz’s bodyguard after the latter took over from Hitler. Cremer displayed remarkable ability by bringing his U-boat back to base after it was rammed, bombed, depth-charged and bullet-riddled. After Cremer transferred to a new boat, U333 was finally sunk by HMS STARLING and HMS LOCH KILLIN. She was the 15th U-boat Captain Walker of Western Approaches fame had helped to destroy, and the 538th U-boat the Admiralty recorded as sunk. THE WARTIME CAREER OF U-BOAT ACE: PETER CREMER & U.333.
